Top 5 LinkedIn Don’ts

This post is the creation of Career Development Coordinator Irene Chan.

Have you explored LinkedIn, one of the most effective professional social media tools? Do you have a LinkedIn profile and have no idea whether or not it’s effective? This is a common experience for many students. Here is a list of the top 5 don’ts for LinkedIn:

1. Don’t include an inappropriate photo

Your photo is an extension of your online brand, so ensure that you create and sustain a positive first impression with your photo. When selecting a photo to represent your personal brand, make your face is clearly visible and that you are the focus of the image. A Bachelor’s is Not Enough

One of the most common concerns students bring into our Career Advising sessions is the usefulness of their Bachelor degree.

This apprehension is shared by students in the Faculty of Science, Arts, Forestry – pretty much across every faculty and discipline at UBC. It is a fear that is propagated through stories of past grads, negative news around the current job market, and job postings that require 3-5 years of experience.
