First-year English and the LPI
First-year English requirements
To complete your degree, you’ll probably have to take 3 or 6 credits (1 or 2 courses) of first-year English. This means that you have to meet certain requirements, regardless of your first language or citizenship. Find out more about the first-year English requirements for students on the Okanagan and Vancouver campuses.
If you do not meet the requirements to enroll in a first-year English course for Vancouver programs, you’ll have to take the Language Proficiency Index, or LPI (I explain the LPI below). For Okanagan programs: you’ll have either to take the LPI or Writing 009.
UBC Welcomes You events
Whether you’re waiting for a UBC offer, considering a UBC offer, or already thinking about where you’d want to go to study abroad, we invite you and your family to join us at a UBC Welcomes You event either in-person or online.
