A lot of newly admitted students are contacting us with questions. I thought it might be helpful to cover some of the most common questions we’re hearing right now.

First-year English and the LPI

First-year English requirements

To complete your degree, you’ll probably have to take 3 or 6 credits (1 or 2 courses) of first-year English. This means that you have to meet certain requirements, regardless of your first language or citizenship. Find out more about the first-year English requirements for students on the Okanagan and Vancouver campuses.

If you do not meet the requirements to enroll in a first-year English course for Vancouver programs, you’ll have to take the Language Proficiency Index, or LPI (I explain the LPI below). For Okanagan programs: you’ll have either to take the LPI or Writing 009.

UBC has two language requirements: the English Language Admission Requirement, and the Language Proficiency Index (LPI).

The English Language Admission Requirement is necessary for admission to ALL undergraduate programs at UBC. You don’t need the LPI to apply, but you will need it to take English courses (and most degree programs have an English requirement).
