2009 Seasonal Hamper for Single Student Parents

November 18th, 2009 by C.J. Rowe

To Staff & Faculty Members

 Access & Diversity is organizing a Seasonal Hamper Program for this coming holiday season and we are wondering if you, your department or faculty would be interested in preparing a hamper for a UBC student who is a single parent and is struggling financially. If staff in your area, or if you as an individual, wish to participate or would like more details, please contact CJ Rowe (22415, cj.rowe@ubc.ca). You will be provided with a decorated box for your hamper items and suggestions to assist you with preparing the boxes will be provided. You will receive family details in the first week of December and hampers will need to be completed by December 21st. This program will serve students who have celebrations other than Christmas at this time of year and we welcome identification of such students in need.

 To Single Student Parents at UBC

Access & Diversity is preparing seasonal hampers for UBC students who are single parents who are struggling financially this holiday season. If you celebrate a seasonal event and are interested in receiving a hamper, that would provide you with food products and gifts for your child(ren), please contact CJ Rowe (22415, cj.rowe@ubc.ca). This will be totally confidential with Access & Diversity matching families to hampers.

If you are interested, please tell me:

1)      The ages and genders of your children;

2)      If there are any special dietary requirements in your house?

3)      Provide a short list of what your child(ren) might like to receive as a gift?

4)      What size clothing they wear and what their favourite colours are?

5)      Which supermarket is closest to your home?

The hampers will likely be ready for pick up or delivery on December 21st, 2009. Will you be requiring delivery? The hampers can be quite large and heavy, so you may need a car ride to take it home, if you don’t want delivery.

On December 6, 1989, an armed man walked into an engineering class at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal. After forcing the men to leave, he stated that he hated feminists. He started shooting the women in the class, then beyond it. At the end of his killing rampage, he shot himself. As a result of these acts of violence, and the link women made between these acts and everyday sexism, Canada established December 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. The day marks not only the anniversary of the massacre, but also reminds us of acts of gender-based violence against women in Canada and around the world. As a day of action, it prompts us to take steps to end violence against women.
